Pearls have long been cherished as symbols of purity and perfection, elegance and affluence. These unusual gems are created inside living animals called mollusks, and occurs in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors.
Throughout history, people have been so fascinated by the beauty of pearls that many jewellery and decorative objects were fashioned out of natural pearls, collected from both freshwater and marine mollusks. The beauty of pearls have always been appreciated through its surface, size and shape, its color and overtone as well as its luster and iridescence.
One of the most distinctive features of a nacreous pearl is the way it seems to glow from with. This is the ‘lustre’ of pearls that gives it its extraordinary beauty. Luster results from the reflection of light not only off the surface of the pearl but also off the concentric inner layers of nacre. The multiple layers of nacre also give rise to “iridescence’ or ‘orient’ of pearls. Light is refracted so that a pearl glows with all colours of the rainbow.
